Case Study - Dust Containment
Basildon Chemicals
Based in Abingdon, Basildon Chemicals manufacture a range of chemicals and products based on silicone polymers. These include emulsions, greases and antifoams.
Problem
Various liquids, known as pharmaceutical intermediaries, are transferred from bulk mixers to smaller containers and it is vital to perform the actual filling operation under controlled, clean conditions.
Specifically, Basildon Chemicals need to carry out the filling within a controlled environment with air filtration equivalent to a Class 100 Clean room standard (ISO 14644).
Solution
The required filling environment is achieved by the application of a JJ Genesis Containment Booth of double-skin stainless steel construction.
The Booth measures 3,160 mm wide x 3,160 mm deep x 3,200 mm height to ceiling and air is circulated through three stages of filtration. The final, or third stage, comprises ceiling-mounted HEPA filters, to Grade H14, producing an even downflow of clean air into the Booth. These high-grade filters feature a gel seal to ensure no possibility of short-circuiting or air leakage when fitted. To resist any ingress of airborne contaminants from the factory, the Booth is slightly pressurised via an additional intake of filtered air.
The Booth design also incorporates lighting, electrical sockets and a built-in stainless steel cabinet. Gauges within the Booth indicate filter condition and downflow velocity. Optimum performance and downflow is assured by an inverter drive which is used to manually vary the fan motor speed to match the condition of the filters.
Commissioning and full validation was carried out to complete the project.
