Case Study - Air Filtration and Clean Rooms
Veetee Rice
Over several years, JJ Ventilation have solved numerous ventilation issues for the General Manager at Veetee Rice, so naturally, when a clean area needed to be provided for a new rice processing line, JJ Ventilation were their first thought.
Problem
Veetee Rice had to create a food production area with clean room air quality to ensure the quality of their end product. After several meetings, a specification evolved for air quality within the main rice processing area, with an increased specification for the high risk packing area. The main part of the design work focused maintaining a positive air pressure within the clean area to prevent the ingress of dirt and pests. The positive air pressurisation had to take into account the process extraction in addition to that required for day-to-day ventilation. The second part of the design work concerned air quality, with the main processing area having an air quality equivalent to the clean room standard Class 10,000 and the high risk packing area having an air quality equivalent to the clean room standard Class 1,000.
Solution
To meet the project requirements of the rice processing area, JJ Ventilation installed six high capacity JJ Fresh Air Inlet Ducts to inject cooling streams of HEPA filtered, fresh air to combat otherwise stale and humid working conditions. Additional extract ventilation was also required to remove the waste heat and humidity. This was achieved by installing five JJ Ducted Vertical Discharge Roof Extract Units to remove the vitiated air from high level within the rice processing area. The high risk area required a more advanced closed control air conditioning system incorporating a higher grade of HEPA filtration than that used within the rice processing area. This was done by utilising an Airedale air handling unit and cleanroom ceiling mounted gel seal filters.
The overall results have given Veetee Rice the high quality atmosphere they require to process and pack their quality products.

Pharmaceutical Clean Room
A well known pharmaceutical manufacturer who had used JJ Ventilation for many general ventilation and extraction projects challenged us to provide the air handling and filtration solution for a new in-house built clean room production facility.
Problem
Our client had to construct a new clean room production facility which had to be classified to ISO Class 7 standard (Class 100,000). The key element of any clean room is the air handling and filtration equipment necessary to provide the clean room quality air over all areas of the production facility. In addition, the air handling equipment also had to maintain cascading air pressures within each of the segregated areas. The highest air pressure was to be within the processing area with the air pressure dropping within the packing area and then dropping further within the changing areas and air locks. The air handling equipment also had to control the internal temperature, providing summer cooling and winter heating.
Solution

JJ Ventilation installed a ducted system incorporating steam and electric heater sections, chilled water cooling coil and three-stages of filtration including gel-seal HEPA filters situated in the ceilings of each segregated area. Air was allowed to escape from the building via a series of low level pressure relief dampers. The ductwork system was installed at the time of the build with a comprehensive post-installation commissioning visit to finally install the gel-seal HEPA filters, balance air flows and adjust pressure relief dampers to achieve the required cascading air pressures. Upon completion, our client was provided with all documentation encompassing design criteria, performance criteria and installation and operation reports. When all commissioning work was completed, an independent test was carried out to ascertain the appropriate pharmaceutical accreditations.
Key Features
- Clean room air quality to ISO Class 7.
- Cascading air pressures.
- Environmental control for summer and winter.
- Complete documentation package.
- Achieve pharmaceutical accreditation.
